About This Program
The Certification in Privacy Law and Policy (including 24 Florida Bar CLE credits) offers an in-depth exploration of the legal frameworks and policies governing privacy in various contexts. This comprehensive program is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of privacy law. The curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Workplace Privacy: Participants will learn about federal constitutional concepts and legislation governing workplace privacy, such as the Privacy Act, HIPAA, and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The course also addresses state-specific privacy laws, workplace monitoring, employment screening, and the legal implications of employment agreements.
- Government Information Requests: This module explores the legal issues involved when private sector companies provide information to the government. Topics include the Fourth Amendment, FOIA, the CLOUD Act, and the legal standards for search warrants, subpoenas, and court orders. Participants will also learn about the risks and protections related to government disclosure of company information.
- Privacy Program Management: This section focuses on the development and implementation of privacy programs within organizations. Participants will learn about data assessment, protecting personal information, policy development, and staff training. The course also covers the rights of individuals under various privacy laws and how to handle security incidents and breaches.
- Sector-Specific Privacy Laws: The program delves into privacy regulations specific to various sectors, including healthcare, financial services, education, telecommunications, and marketing. Participants will gain an understanding of laws such as FERPA, GLBA, GDPR, and state-specific privacy regulations like the California Consumer Privacy Act.
- Regulatory Enforcement: This module examines the roles of federal and state regulatory bodies in enforcing privacy laws. Participants will learn about the enforcement actions of agencies such as the FTC, FCC, and HHS, as well as the implications of regulatory compliance for businesses.
- Global Privacy Issues: The course addresses international privacy laws and regulations, including the GDPR and the EU-US Privacy Shield. Participants will explore the challenges and requirements of complying with global privacy standards and the impact of international data transfer regulations.

Refunds will only be granted in the event the learner requests a refund, in writing via email to stoopscenter@law.fsu.edu within three (3) business days from the date of registration, or prior to accessing the course, whichever occurs first. Date of registration will be determined by confirmation of payment. No refund will be granted in the event the learner accessed a course in any manner. A processing fee of 2.75% will be deducted from any refund distributed. Please allow up to 30 days for the processing of all refunds. Once lessons have begun, payment is non-refundable. The Stoops Center does not give refunds to learners who do not or cannot finish the course or certification for which they have registered. In the case of a no-show, no refund will be granted. Emergency cases will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
