This course provides an in-depth exploration of employment discrimination laws and their application in the workplace. It covers a wide range of federal statutes, constitutional protections, and evolving areas of discrimination.
Key topics include:
- Federal Statutes: A comprehensive survey of federal laws prohibiting workplace discrimination, including the Civil Rights Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Equal Pay Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, and more. This module also covers the historical context and the rights, remedies, and defenses associated with these statutes.
- Retaliation Protections: An examination of the Civil Rights Act of 1991 and the protections against retaliation provided by various federal statutes. This includes an analysis of actions that constitute retaliation and key Supreme Court cases interpreting retaliation clauses.
- Constitutional Protections: An overview of the protections provided by the U.S. Constitution in the public sector, focusing on the First Amendment, due process, and liberty and property interests.
- Evolving Areas of Discrimination: A look at the latest developments in employment discrimination, including protections for LGBTQI+ individuals.
- Regulatory Environment: An exploration of the federal regulatory environment, including the roles of the U.S. Department of Labor, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
- Human Resources Best Practices: Guidance on best practices for HR professionals, including policies and procedures to protect employers from litigation and the pre-suit administrative process.
By the end of this course, learners will have a thorough understanding of employment discrimination laws, the regulatory environment, and best practices for managing and preventing discrimination in the workplace.

Refunds will only be granted in the event the learner requests a refund, in writing via email to stoopscenter@law.fsu.edu within three (3) business days from the date of registration, or prior to accessing the course, whichever occurs first. Date of registration will be determined by confirmation of payment. No refund will be granted in the event the learner accessed a course in any manner. A processing fee of 2.75% will be deducted from any refund distributed. Please allow up to 30 days for the processing of all refunds. Once lessons have begun, payment is non-refundable. The Stoops Center does not give refunds to learners who do not or cannot finish the course or certification for which they have registered. In the case of a no-show, no refund will be granted. Emergency cases will be judged on a case-by-case basis.
